The Common Alder is widespread throughout most of Europe. It tolerates very moist soils, and is found mainly on the banks of rivers and streams, and in very swampy locations. It is a dark tree, with fissured bark and deep green leaves. In late winter and spring it has catkins, and in spring has green egg-shaped fruits which develop to look like miniature pine cones.
